The assembly comprises a bulkhead demarcating the driving compartment. A support (30) situated in the driving compartment is fixed to the bulkhead. The assembly comprises a steering column (2), fixed to the support, having a lower end connected to the vehicle steering and an upper end carrying the steering wheel (12). There are several shock absorbing parts (14,82) for protecting the driver in the event of impact against an obstacle. The rigidity of and location of these shock absorbers is such that they are brought successively into action.The steering column has a steering shaft (4) and one shock absorbing part (14), such as a corrugated tube, is fitted on the shaft. This tube transmits a torque and contracts following recoil of the vehicle front towards the driving compartment in the event of impact with an obstacle. The shock absorbing tube has a shoulder (16) which comes into contact with a stop fixed to the support.
