The invention relates to an arrangement and a method for braking a vehicle (1). The arrangement comprises a detection system (2) adapted to detect at least the distance (d) to an object ahead (3) in the direction of travel of the vehicle, and a control unit (5) adapted to estimate at least one necessary retardation value (r2) for the vehicle if a collision with the object ahead is to be prevented. The control unit is adapted to initiate automatic braking of the vehicle by the estimated retardation value up to a limit value. The arrangement also comprises indicating means (14) adapted to indicate to a driver when a greater retardation value (r2) than said limit value (rg) is required and at least one control (15, 16) which, in conjunction with such an indication, is manoeuvrable by the driver to initiate braking of the vehicle by the necessary retardation value. |
