The process involves making an adaptation of a camshaft and a crankshaft by determining position in phase of the camshaft with respect to the crankshaft and by observing position during the operation of an internal combustion engine. An adjusting system of the camshaft is adjusted according to variable set points such that position corresponds to the set points.
