A circular knitting machine producing a slit tube of knitted fabric has at the inner edges of the needled parts of the plate and cylinder auxiliary nip roller pairs to keep the edges of the knitting under tension during the periods when the main draw -down rollers permit free-dom of movement. The auxiliary rollers can be driven by levers connected to the main drive, acting through a ratchet and pawl.
