Machine tool drive incorporating a motor with a reduction gear which is pre-set, with variable speed, and automatically reversible. The motor has a driven shaft and two sets of sliding change gears in a remotely controlled, automatically engageable gear unit. For the sets of sliding change gears, two adjustment cylinders are provided, whose connecting rods are in permanent engagement with the appropriate gear wheels. Adjustment cylinders engage hydraulically, electro-hydraulically or pneumatically with gear wheels via an automatic, repeating coupling movement.
