Concrete blocks consist of (per m3) : Sand (grain size 0-4 mm) 400-700 (530) kg. Slag (grain size 0-4 mm) 400-700 (550) kg. Gravel (grain size 3-9 mm) 500-700 (650)kg. Cement 200-400 (300) kg. Water 60-170 (80) kg. Blocks made from the concrete mix are fed to a tumbling machine in which the corners and edges are rounded off. The blocks after treatment are used to pave roads etc. The uniformity of the blocks give a smoother road surface with reduced traffic moise. Paving blocks made from the material have an antique appearance and provide better grip for tyres in bad weather. They are also cheaper than blocks made from blue basalt.
