The furnace charge contains coal (I) employed for redn., and also fuels (II) which evolve combustible gases when heated; and air is injected through the drum wall into the charge in the zone where the latter is being heated up to its redn. temp. The pref. fuel (II) consists of natural oil-bearing rocks such as oil shale and similar materials, which may be impregnated with more oil; or material partly or completely enriched with oil by artificial means. The charge may contain porous minerals such as oxide pellets impregnated with oil; after travelling through the drum furnace, these pellets are reclaimed, re-impregnated with oil, and again added to the charge. In similar conventional processes, fuel (I) consists partly or completely of bituminous coal, but this material is not always available, so the invention uses an auxiliary fuel (II) to aid rapid heating of the charge.
