An apparatus for winding wire helices has a driven winding mandrel (1) which widens in the winding zone and a fixed guide (16) shaped in accordance with the pitch of the turns (W) to be wound of the wire helix. In the region of the entry (X) of the wire, the winding mandrel (1) has a portion (A) which widens in the form of a truncated cone and, adjoining this, towards the wire delivery end (Y), a cylindrical portion (B). The frustoconical portion (A) of the winding mandrel (1) is shorter than the cylindrical portion (B), which can be provided with grooves (7) extending in the longitudinal direction. <IMAGE>
