The seat belt retractor is provided with a mounting which moves with the seat when the seat is shifted forwardly or rearwardly. The retractor (19) is attached to the seat frame by a resilient coupling (16) and is mounted on a sleeve (15) movable on a track (17). As the seat is moved, the retractor and sleeve move and relocate on the track in accord with fore and aft movement and vertical displacement. Ratchet teeth (27) are provided on the track and a spring (35) biases the retractor from lock engagement against the teeth. Under upward stress by the seat belt, the retractor tilts and a pawl (34) on sleeve (15) engages the ratchet teeth and secures the retractor against any further movement.
