In an optical advertising device having a light-transmitting mirror behind which is mounted a transparency which carries the advertising information and is illuminated at time intervals by a light source arranged behind it, the light-transmitting mirror forming the front closure, facing the observer, of a housing which accommodates the transparency and light source, the object of reducing the depth dimensions of the device to dimensions such as are adopted in normal framed mirrors, a sharp image being produced on the semi-transmitting mirror given full illumination of the transparency, is achieved when the transparency is a large-format transparency which bears directly against the silvered rear of the light-transmitting mirror and is pressed by a light-transmitting pressure disc against the mirror, and when the light source consists of at least one fluorescent tube or grouping of fluorescent tubes which emit diffuse light, and positively illuminate the entire transparency uniformly, and are arranged behind the pressure disc. All the switch gear and the chokes of the fluorescent tubes are accommodated in a separate switch gear chamber of the housing which is situated outside the mirror region. The time intervals of the illumination of the transparency and/or the duration of the illumination can, as the case may be, also be adjusted to different periodic cycles.
