The present invention relates to an apparatus for certifying magnetic tapes. This apparatus comprises a device 6 with write head and read head for writing to the tape a clock signal from a periodic generator 8 and for retrieving, by reading, a signal having a rate related to the written signal. The apparatus furthermore comprises a detection circuit 1 for comparing the amplitude of the signal read with a threshold provided by a means 9, a means 3 of storing the threshold-crossing times, clocked by activation means 5 receiving a signal from the detection circuit 1. The apparatus finally comprises a first counting means 7 clocked by the activation means 5, and a second counting means 11, for counting the read errors (absence of signal or residual signal).
