PURPOSE:To permit a reception side to always obtain a satisfactory picture by executing a check operation for assuring the performance of a picture read part and transmitting the original previous to the reading of the original at the time of transmission. CONSTITUTION:A light source 1d irradiated a while reference board 1e, and it irradiates an original surface it the original 1c is carried. The reflected light is photoelectrically converted in a photoelectric conversion par 1b through a mirror 1f and a lens 1g, and a binarized white signal 31a and the picture signal of the original are outputted. If a switch 2 receives the white signal 31a, it transmits it to a read supervisory part 3, and if it received a picture signal 31, it transmits it to a coding part 5. The read supervisory part 3 compares and collates the white signal 31a for one scanning line and the reference white signal which hes been previously stored in a ROM3a at every bit in a comparator 3 and generates a control signal 32 if the number of disagree bits exceeds a prescribed number so as to execute an alarm action.
