The loaves are arranged alternately on a conveyer and after being cut in halves by a knife K are fed in pairs to a turntable T which has diagonally disposed platforms and is arranged when raised above the conveyer to interchange a half-loaf A and a half-loaf B. The stream leaving the turntable thus has the A halves at one side and the B halves at the other. The turntable is moved up and down by a lever 31. Fig. 5, pivoted to a swivel sleeve 32 mounted between collars on the rod 33, the lever being controlled by a stud 27, Fig. 11, moving in a cam groove 16 in a member 16 on the drive shaft 17. The conveyer sprocket 26 is intermittently driven from the shaft 17 through cranks 18, 19 the latter of which carries a pawl 21 co-operating with a ratchet 22, the arrangement being such that the conveyer is advanced during alternate half-revolutions of the member 16, while the turntable is raised and lowered during the intervening half-revolutions. The other face of the member 16 is formed with cam grooves 41, Fig. 7, engaged by studs 42, 42b on an arm secured to a shaft 43 which drives a bevel gear 45, Fig. 8, loose on the rod 33 and fixed to a yoke 46 carrying rods 46 on which slides a yoke 47 clamped to the rod 33. The grooves. 41 are such that during a quarter-revolution of the member 16 while the turntable is raised the shaft 43 rotates the turntable through 180‹. A pressure plate 38 carried by a rod 37 keyed to and slidable within the tubular rod 33 holds the half-loaves on the turntable while in the raised position.
