The dryer (1) comprises at least one additional heat exchanger as a heater (8), arranged in the heating exhaust stream before a gas-gas heat exchanger (7). On the heating side, exhaust gases are cooled by passing through the additional heat exchanger. On the cooling side, either steam is generated or a heat transfer fluid, of high volume specific heat capacity, is heated. The dryer consists of a vapour heated drying path (2) with an additional heated drying path (4). At least one more heat exchanger, as a heat register (5), provides the additional heating of the dryer and is arranged after the vapour-heated drying path. The heating side releases heat by condensing steam or cooling a heat transfer medium of high specific heat capacity. Further heat, in addition to that from the vapour, is supplied. The heater and the heat register are connected together to create a circuit (9) for the heating medium.
