Axial-piston hydraulic motor used in road vehicle

The axial piston motor uses a swashplate (4) which may be set at a constant angle so that the motor acts as a constant volume machine. The cylinders consist of equispaced axial bores in an annular cylinder block (7). The pistons (9) are cup-shaped with large-diameter bores connecting with narrower bores at the ends connecting with bores through the hemispherical sliding elements (10). The cylinder block rotates on tapered roller bearings (6a,b) on a central pin or axle or pin (5). The cylinder block is integrated with the drive system (2) for the vehicle wheel and the assembly incorporates a disc brake using multiple plates in contact.
