A method for treating inflammation comprising administering a subject in need thereof with a therapeutically effective amount of a compound of formula (I): wherein R1, R2 and R3 independently are H or an alkyl, and Ar is an aryl group or a five-membered heteroaryl group containing one, two or three heteroatoms selected from the group consisting of N, O and S, wherein the aryl group and the heteroaryl group are unsubstituted or substituted by one or two substituents independently selected from the group consisting of halo and mesyl, provided that when R3 is a methyl group, Ar is not a 3-chloropyrrolyl group,or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein the compound of formula (I) is in a therapeutically effective amount to (i) inhibit production of nitric oxide (NO) or expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), interleukin-6 (IL-6) or tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), (ii) inhibit NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated IL-1β expression, or (iii) inhibit reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPR) phosphorylation, NF-κB activation or protein kinase C (PKC) activation, in macrophages or dendritic cells of the subject.
