<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display with which desired viewing angle characteristics are obtained, while making the most of the advantages of a parallel orientated liquid crystal layer. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal layer 15 is made to be the parallel orientation type, and third and fourth retardation films 14, 24 have negative birefringence and have optic axes nearly parallel to the director of a liquid crystal molecule of the liquid crystal layer with no electric field applied thereto. Second and fifth retardation films 13, 23 have slow axes parallel to the director and are composed of a material, of which the Nz=(n<SB>x</SB>-n<SB>z</SB>)/(n<SB>x</SB>-n<SB>y</SB>) value is 1 or less wherein a refractive index in the slow axis direction, that in the fast axis direction, and that in the direction perpendicular to the slow and fast axes are represented by n<SB>x</SB>, n<SB>y</SB>and n<SB>z</SB>respectively. The sum of retardation of the liquid crystal layer 15 in the dark state and that of the second or the fifth retardation film is set to be nearly a half of the wavelength of light. First and sixth retardation films 12, 22 are composed of a material of which the Nz value is 1 or less and has retardation nearly a half of that of the wavelength of light. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
