A small water softening/purificn. unit partic. for a domestic coffee-making machine, comprises a filter element in the form of a casing packed with ion exchange resin. The element has an outlet connection which is removably coupled to the water inlet of the machine. The inlet port of the element is immersed in water in the machines water tank. Pref. the resin is retained in the casing between one perforated screen at the outlet end and a second perforated screenas the inlet end. For regeneration of the resin, the element is removed from the tank, inverted, and placed beneath a water tap. A quantity of sodium chloride is palced in a funnel on top of the inlet screen. Tap water is run through the funnel to dissolve salt and carry it through the resin. This back-flushing also cleans the resin. Used for softening water partic. to prevent scale formation in the boiler of a coffee making machine. The softener is small enough and cheap enough to be viable for fitting inside the water tank of domestic coffee making machines. |
