The invention relates to a method of protecting stainless steels which are applied before the production of the hot-rolled sandwich. A metal powder, for example nickel, is dispersed in ethyl alcohol in the form of particles having a compact configuration and is deposited electrophoretically on the stainless steel. The resultant deposit has beneficial adhesion without the necessity of a further post-treatment.
