In a process for producing a process air stream, virtually free of nitrogen oxides, for process engineering purposes, a first gas stream is passed through a plasma generator and heated therein to the ionisation temperature, i.e. to give a plasma gas stream which is introduced into the process air stream, and the temperature of the process air stream is adjusted by means of the rate of the plasma gas stream. The first gas stream is formed from a gas not containing free nitrogen and free oxygen, preferably consisting of steam. The heated plasma gas stream is introduced into the process air stream at such a rate that virtually no nitrogen oxides are formed.
