The invention relates to a novel formaldehyde-binding agent based on a product, obtainable in a plurality of steps, of the condensation of phenolsulphonic acid, urea, formaldehyde, melamine and alkali metal disulphite or alkali metal bisulphite or sulphite, to which a compound selected from the group consisting of urea, cyanamide, dicyanamide, ammonium cyanate, potassium cyanate, guanidine salts, carboxamides, salts of carbamic acid or mixtures thereof, is added, to the use thereof in the production of wood chip materials, and to a process for the production of wood chip materials having reduced formaldehyde emission.
