A lightweight building material is described which uses calcium sulphate hemihydrate as binder and a large proportion of fibres, in particular cellulose fibres from waste paper, and which is prepared at a water/gypsum factor of > 1.5, so that a readily flowable mass is formed which, after setting, gives a very light but nevertheless strong building material which is suitable for filling cavities by casting, but also for producing mouldings, and which can contain further additives, such as foaming agents, water-binding agents, cement and lime.
