The invention relates to a method for winding-off from reels (spools) of metal wire, especially steel, copper or aluminium alloy wire, as well as a winding-off device implementing this method. According to the method implemented, a static reel (spool) is wound off from its centre and its outer end is butt-joined to the inner end of the next reel (spool). The method is characterised in that a first reel (spool) 1 to be wound off is placed in the as-received state so that its lateral face bears on a cradle 3 with its axis 4 approximately horizontal and so that its front radial face 5 bears against a bearing structure 6 provided with guides which define, for the wire 10, a passage 7 of width less than the initial internal diameter of a reel (spool) 1 and in that the next reels (spools) 2 bearing on the same cradle 3 are loaded one after each other.
