The invention relates to a universal holder with a base part, especially in the form of a screw clamp which can be attached to a workbench, and a mounting for machining devices or machine tools with a ball joint which can be fixed in a selected position. In this case, a simple quick-acting and safely handled fixing of the ball joint is to be achieved and moreover a fine adjustment of the selected angle is to be possible. For this purpose, when the joint ball is of relatively soft material, for example plastic or cast zinc, the displaceable counter bearing in the ball receptacle is formed in the shape of an annular sleeve of hard material, for example steel, and for clamping purposes bears against the joint ball by means of an annular edge.
