PURPOSE:To improve responsiveness and reliability by disposing a porous material formed by bonding the particles of silicon carbide with the particles of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) between a display electrode over counter electrode and impregnating a liquid electrolyte into said porous material. CONSTITUTION:The porous material formed by bonding the particles 10 of the silicon carbide by the particles 11 of the PTFE is disposed between the display electrode and counter electrode and the liquid electrolyte 6B is impregnated into the porous material. More specifically, the material formed by bonding the particles 10 of the silicon carbide by the particles 11 of the PTFE is porous and, therefore, if the liquid electrolyte 6b is absorbed and held therein, material transfer (ion transfer) takes place via the porous parts and since the ions have electric charge, the material transfer corresponds to electric current. Since the liquid electrolyte 6B is held in the porous material, the leakage of the liquid electrolyte 6B to the outside of the display element is eventually obviated. The electrochromic (EC) display element provided with both the high speed responsiveness and high reliability is thus obtd.
