The chuck has a muti-segment body defining a hole (25) into which a lead guide tube (27) is shiftably inserted. The chuck body has a lead gripping portion (26) on whose rear is provided an acting portion which faces the tip of the guide tube. During tube advancement, its tip abuts the chuck. Such abutment acts to open the gripping portions of the chuck segments (18). The acting portion and tube tip are preferably non-linear, for example they are sloped. An elastic ring may be provided to frictionally hold the lead. The chuck is simple and can be manufactured cheaply.
