Articles such as pallets (10) are moulded from a mixture (36) of flake-like wood particles and a binder in a press (68,70), the pallets having a deck (12) and integrally molded legs (16). Prior to pressing the pallet, a loosely fitted mat of wood flakes (36) is formed by depositing a first plurality of layers of the wood flakes onto a supporting surface (32) with the flakes of at least some of the layers in the regions where the legs of the pallet will be formed being aligned by flake aligners (88), followed by depositing a second plurality of layers with a flake aligner (94) causing alignment of flakes in the intended leg regions of the pallet in a direction transverse to the direction of alignment of the flakes of the first layers.
