A process for preparing sodium alginate having 60,000-300,000 average molecular weight comprises (a) extracting brown alage to separte crude sod. alginate having 300-500 cps of viscosity of 1% soln., (b) resolving it in water, and depolymerizing it with an oxidizing agent at pH around neutral, (c) making it acidic with HCl to educe sod. alginate gel, and (d) neutralizing the gel with NaOH and squeeze drying it by use of methanol. The oxidizing agent is selected from Na-hypochlorite, Na-chlorite, Na-chlorate, Na- perchlorate, etc. The effective chlorine conc. is pref. 0.05- 0.2 w/v %.
