The optical system uses a mirror (1) of nearly elliptical section with the open face directed upwards. A source of illumination (4) is located within the section of the mirror and sends direct and reflected light (5,6) upwards to a plane mirror (2). The plane mirror (2) is placed at or near to the focal point of the elliptical mirror (1) and angled such that the incident light arriving from the source of illumination and the reflected light from the nearly elliptical mirror (1) are both further reflected to illuminate a preselected target (3). |
