PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method to efficiently produce an intermediate transfer body having a highly smooth surface while suppressing color smear by roughly polishing the surface of the base of the intermediate transfer body and then polishing by using a film type polishing member while vibrating the polishing member in the transverse direction. SOLUTION: A belt type base body 51 is engaged on a mandrel 52, and a film type polishing member 53 touches the surface of an elastic layer of the base body 51. While the mandrel 52 is rotated at a proper rate in the direction of the arrow in the figure, the film type polishing member is vibrated in the transverse direction and preferably moved along the direction of the arrow so that a new face of the film type polishing member 53 always touches the elastic layer surface of the base body 51. By polishing with the film type polishing member 53 above described, the max. surface roughness of the elastic layer surface of the base body 51 is decreased to <=5μm, preferably <=2μm. Therefore, the obtd. body as treated can be used as the intermediate transfer body.
