PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a batch type hardening apparatus to stably form a surface- hardened layer free from surface roughness and having a uniform thickness. SOLUTION: A hardening chamber having a heating means and a tray with a member consisting of titanium and a titanium alloy placed thereon is disposed inside an evacuation device body provided with a gas inlet and a gas outlet, and a hardening apparatus with hot water of 50 deg.C circulating on the external wall or the internal wall of the evacuation device body and the external wall or the internal wall of the hardening chamber, or a hardening apparatus having a sheath heater arranged on the internal wall of the evacuation device body and the internal wall or the external wall of the hardening chamber to heat the internal wall of a vacuum tank device body, and the external wall and the internal wall of the hardening chamber, are employed to obtain the hardening apparatus to stably form the surface-hardened layer free from the surface roughness and having a uniform thickness.
