PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flat light source equipped with a large size enclosure capable of preventing the occurrence of a dark space in the light emitting surface. SOLUTION: The space between the front base plate 1 and the rear base plate 2 is supported by the frames 3 and results in producing the confined discharge space 126. The height of the discharge space 126 is set to have a constant clearance. Pyramid shape glass spacers 11 are provided inside the discharge space 126. The glass spacers 11 are laid out so that their bottoms are exposed to the internal surface of the rear base plate 2 and that their tops are exposed to the internal surface of the front base plate 1. This lay-out enables also a surrounding ultraviolet ray to reach around the tops of the glass spacers 11 of the phosphor film 122 on the front base plate 1. As a result, all the surface of the phosphor film 122 is in a position to emit lights, regardless of the existence of the glass spacers 11.
