PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicularly recording/reproducing magnetic head capable of generating a steep and sufficiently large perpendicular magnetic field component, and forming a sharp recording bit on the perpendicular magnetic recording medium of a high coercive force, enabling high-density recording to be carried out, and its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: A magnetic gap is provided between upper and lower magnetic poles 1 and 3 made of soft magnetic materials having high saturation magnetic flux densities (Bs), and a coil 2 is provided in this gap. A GMR element 4 including a giant magneto-resistive artificial grating film and an electrode part is provided between upper and lower magnetic shields including an upper magnetic shield 3 as a lower magnetic pole and a lower magnetic shield 5. A perpendicular magnetic field component is intensified by processing and removing the part of track width×width W×depth H of the upper magnetic pole, a steep recording bit is formed on the perpendicular magnetic recording medium of a high coercive force (Hc), and high-density recording is carried out.
