PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact decompressing apparatus to be put onto a four-stroke cycle internal combustion engine, having intake and exhaust valves, respectively driven to open and close by intake and exhaust cams integrally formed with a cam shaft. SOLUTION: This apparatus comprises a set of decompression cams each, having a built-in one-way clutch operative for transmitting torque, only when the cam shaft is reversed. The decompressing cams are disposed to be adjacent to either or both cams of the intake and exhaust cams and fitted onto the cam shaft; the intake and exhaust valves are held in rollable contact with a plurality of cam rollers, which are respectively pivotally supported on a plurality of rocker arms each being operative to open the intake valve or the exhaust valve, and the rocker arms, each have a contact face held in contact with one of the decompressing cams and positioned on a cam roller support portion, whereby the roller cam is supported.
