PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical path dividing element which is small-sized by using the three-dimensional optical system and in which power is given to reduce numbers of components and an image display device using the optical path dividing element. SOLUTION: The optical path dividing element which divides the luminous flux emitted from one object 3 into at least two optical paths 331 and 332 has a prism member 10, and the prism member 10 has an incident plane 11 where the luminous flux emitted from the object 3 is made incident in the prism, at least two reflective surfaces 12 and 13 which reflect the luminous flux in the prism, an emitting plane 14 which emits the luminous flux to the outside of the prism, and further, at least one rotational asymmetric plane. At least one optical operating surface 13 is constituted of surfaces of discontinuity consisting of at least two adjacent surfaces 131 and 132 and other optical operating surfaces 11, 12, and 14 are arranged in common in at least two divided optical paths.
