1454522 Bulked polyester composite yarn IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 11 Feb 1974 [23 Feb 1973] 8990/73 Headings D1F and D1W A process for the production of a bulked polyester yarn comprises forming a bundle composed of 25-75% by weight of (A) potentially crimpable, drawn bicomponent polyester filaments (as defined) and 75-25% by weight of (B) drawn polyester homofilaments, the filaments (A) having a greater potential shrinkage than the filaments (B); and subjecting the filaments of the bundle to the action of an interlacer 10 using jets of heated gaseous medium, while substantially simultaneously allowing the filaments to relax, the jets of gaseous medium serving to forward the bundle and to interlace and twist the filaments preferably to produce a yarn having alternating compact and loopy zones. In one embodiment, bundles of the two types of filaments are fed from bobbins 1 to guide 2 and feed rolls 3, 4. From the rolls 3, 4 the combined bundles pass to the feed roll 5 of a draw zone and thence to draw roll 7. The drawn bundle is then fed to the interlacer 10 and immediately to a conical expansion chamber 12 where the filaments are relaxed prior to passage to relax rolls 13, 14 and wind-up means 15. The temperature of the heated gaseous medium in the interlacer is in the range 170-250‹C, preferably 210-240‹C, and the flow of the medium is in the range 20-80 cubic feet per hour, preferably 40-65 cubic feet per hour. The gaseous medium is usually air. Examples of combinations of bicomponent and homofilaments are given.
