PROCESS FOR PREPARING 4-SUBSTITUTED IMIDAZOLE COMPOUNDS

A process for preparing 4-(oxy, thio or amino)methylimidazole compounds via displacement of the trisubstituted phosphonium group from 4-(trisubstituted phosphonium)methylimidazole compounds is disclosed. The process provides an efficient and high yield method of producing these imidazoles which are useful as intermediates in the preparation of pharmacologically active compounds such as histamine H2-antagonists.
