The device possesses a mobile support (3) rotating about a horizontal axis (2) on which the heavy item (20) rests, and at least one jack (5) connected in an articulated manner to the mobile support (3). The support (3) can be moved between two stable positions in which it rests on supporting devices (22, 23) disposed on either side of the vertical plane (26) containing the axis of rotation (2) of the support. The force exerted by the jack (5) during the rotation through 90 DEG C is at first motive and then resistant. The jack (5) is fed by a hydraulic circuit having a sequence valve, driven by the feed pressure of the jack, and a braking valve. The invention applies in particular to the handling of subassemblies in nuclear reactors. <IMAGE>
