PURPOSE:To detect chlorine gas at an improved sensitivity, by a method wherein a metal bromide and a metal chlorate, a metal iodate, or a water solution containing metal bromic acid are used as an electrolyte with a liquid impregnated electrode method or a gas transmitting film method. CONSTITUTION:A gas detector, in which a body, impregnated with an electrolyte, is placed between a positive and a negative electrodes, or a gas detector, in which an electrolyte, wherein the positive and the negative electrode are immersed, is held in a receptacle, and a gas permeable film is formed on a part of the receptacle wall, are used, and a specified DC voltage is applied to said electrodes to detect gas. In said detecting method, a mixture water solution of a metal bromide and a metal chlorate, or a water solutin containing a metal iodate and/or metal bromic acid is used as an electrolyte. A moisture absorptive material, such as magnesium, bromide, calcium bromide, is used as the metal bromide, and in case hydrogen chloride gas is detected using a mixture water solution of the moisture absorptive material and a metal chloride as an electrolyte by a liquid impregnated electrode method, an electrolyte is impregnated into a diaphragm once, and this maintains an electrolytis performance for a long time, which results in turning to a more advantage to a maintenance. |
