A process for gouging (routing) metal parts) with low power consumption comprises forming an electric arc between the metal to be grooved and an electrode and blowing compressed air along the electrode to remove the metal melted by the arc. The compressed air is supplied through channels in a blower head on the electrode carrier. The electrode used comprises a core of soft steel with a coating contg. mineral substances which cause a considerable development of gas in the metal fused by the arc, which facilitates removal of the molten metal. - Pref. the electrode coating contains a number of metal oxides which decompose in the arc and cause a considerable development of gas, esp. where one of the metal oxides is Al2O3. The gas-producing electrode coating typically contain 10% graphite, 10% Al2O3, 50% Fe2O3, 10% SiO2, 5% K2O and 10% cellulose derivs.
