PURPOSE:To impart abrasion resistance and solvent resistance to the surface of a molded plastic article having large size or irregular shape with hollow part, by applying a curable coating film containing a silicon compound and a metal oxide to the surface of the article, and forming a silicon oxide film thereon. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a molded plastic article is coated with a composition containing (A) a (hydrolyzed) silicon compound of formula I (R1 is 1-6C hydrocarbon group, vinyl, etc.; R<2> is alkoxy, etc.; l is 0-4) and/or formula II (R<3> and R<4> are acetoxy, Cl, etc.; R<5> and R<6> are univalent hydrocarbon group; A is bivalent hydrocarbon group, etc.; m and n are 1-3) and (B) an oxide sol or oxide fine powder of a metal (e.g. Ti, Zr, etc.), and the composition is cured to obtain the primary coating film. The film is made to contact with a solution of hydrosilicofluoric acid containing silicon oxide in supersaturated state to form a silicon oxide layer on the primary coating film. The solution of hydrosilicofluoric acid is produced by dissolving silicon oxide in an aqueous solution of hydrosilicofluoric acid and adding boric acid to the mixture.
