The subject matter of the invention is a steady rest, in particular for cylindrical grinding machines, consisting of a housing open at one side and at least three adjustable sliding jaws which are offset at angles, project into the housing opening and support the rotating cylindrical workpiece. The two bottom sliding jaws (11, 12) are jointly fastened symmetrically to the vertical centre plane in a cut-out sliding-jaw holder (9) which is mounted on the bottom part (1) in a horizontally and vertically adjustable manner. The top part (2) is linked to the bottom part (1) in a double-jointed manner via lateral levers (20) and has at its front end a vertically adjustable sliding-jaw holder (25) for the top sliding jaw (30). <IMAGE>
