Short-stroke cylinders used to generate hydraulic pressure for short tensioning strokes, containing pistons guided therein via corresponding seals, have mechanical stops as safeguards or stroke limiters, which must absorb the maximum force occurring. The design complexity involved and the wear and oil leakage losses occurring in this design are avoided by a version of a short-stroke element in which a metal ring (2) rests on a metal base (1). A hat-shaped elastic pressure body (4) is inserted in the ring, closing the upper aperture of the metal ring (2) and resting against its inner surface. A hydraulic line (8) opens in the centre from the metal base (1) into the cavity of the pressure body (4). A safety pin (11) that spans the height of the cavity from under spring pressure and runs through the mouth (10) of the hydraulic line (8) is equipped with a valve cone (12) on its end projecting into the hydraulic line (8), which valve cone closes the hydraulic line (8) if the height of the cavity exceeds a set size. Thus an automatic limitation of the hydraulic fluid supply is provided, so that overloading is prevented. Wear and oil leakage losses do not occur. <IMAGE>
