The device is placed on the opposite side to the shooting-in nozzle, in a shuttleless weaving machine where the insertion of the weft thread is ensured by pneumatic means. This device 13 comprises, upstream of a weft aspirator 16, means 22 for the mechanical braking of the weft thread 1, which can consist of a conduit 29 forming a plurality of bends and connected to the axial inlet 17 of the aspirator 16. The efficiency of the aspirator 16 is thus increased, whilst at the same time the consumption of compressed air is reduced, the weft thread 1 being both sucked in and retained mechanically at the end of insertion. <IMAGE>
