Gas mixtures are separated by absorption of one or more components of the mixture in a suitable liquid absorbent in a multistage process, gas and liquid flowing in cocurrent within each stage but countercurrent overall. Thus, in stage I, the gas stream (broken line) and liquid stream (solid line) pass in cocurrent up duct 15, unabsorbed gas passing from stage I successively to stages II and III to contact progressively burner absorbent, product gas leaving at 12. The richest absorbent leaves at 13, suitably for regeneration and recycling to stage III. If preferred, the stages may be mounted one above the other (see Fig. 2, not shown), and duct 15 may be filled with suitable packings. In examples, an ethanolamine/dimethyl sulphoxide absorbent is used to absorb CO 2 from a mixture thereof with H 2 ; and an ethanolamine/ N-methyl pyrrolidone mixture is used to absorb CO 2 from a mixture thereof with N 2 . In both cases, the absorbent is regenerated by driving off the CO 2 heating. Reference is also made to the absorption of various other gases using diverse solvents.</p> |
