The invention concerns the monitoring of a relatively long sector of track (G) by means of associated axle-counting units (AZW1 and AZW2), at least one (AZW2) of which transmits the axle counts (Z2) it determines to an axle-counting unit (AZW1) responsible for reporting whether the sector of track is clear or occupied. The invention calls for the transmission of these axle counts to be carried out outside the times during which the sector of track is incorporated in a route; this produces an "occupied" report for the sector of track. Not until a signal box (STW) ascertains that the sector (G) is required for a train route does it become possible to transmit the status of the counters. If the sector is free and the route established then data transmission is maintained until all the signalling functions necessary for the passage of the train have been carried out, i.e. an "occuppied" report for the sector does not lead to the route failing; the earliest possible moment for this is when the sector is occupied by the train for which the route request was made. Owing to the fact that data only need to be transmitted between the counting points at the ends of the sector if a route request has been made for the sector being monitored, the continuous transmission of data, solely for safety reasons, over a special line provided for this purpose is no longer necessary. |
