A magnetoelectric pickup device for use with a stringed musical instrument combines magnetostriction and the piezoelectric effect to detect a combination of magnetic field oscillations produced by a vibrating ferromagnetic string and acoustic vibrations from the body of the instrument itself. The result is a sound reproduction that preserves the natural acoustic timbre of the instrument. |

1. A magnetoelectric pickup for a musical string instrument, the pickup comprising:
a magnetoelectric sensor comprising:
an inner electrode core comprising a magnetostrictive material;a piezoelectric coating material surrounding the inner electrode core at least in part; andan outer electrode layer applied to an outer surface of the piezoelectric coating material comprising either a conductive material or a conductive magnetostrictive material;wherein the piezoelectric coating material is elastically bonded to the inner electrode core; and a pickup mount comprising said magnetoelectric sensor and adapted to mount on the body of a musical string instrument; wherein an oscillating magnetic field from a vibrating ferromagnetic string in the vicinity of the pickup element produces a voltage output signal between said inner and outer electrodes. |
