The method involves using a coolant mixture made of the low boiling-point gases oxygen and nitrogen. The molecular proportion of nitrogen is 20-24%. The liquid coolant mixture is evaporated below atmospheric pressure in a circuit, then compressed, pre-cooled and expanded. The pre-cooling of the coolant mixture takes place at temperatures below 100 K. For the pre-cooling, a low-boiling point liquid is used, preferably liquid nitrogen. The compressed and pre-cooled coolant mixture cools down cold coolant vapor coming out of the evaporator and is then subjected to throttling. An Independent claim is given for a device for carrying out the method.
