PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely discriminate the absence of a DRAW session. SOLUTION: A controller 70A controls a tracking servo circuit 20 and a thread servo control 30 by using program region start position information PSi of the next session included in the management information read from a lead-in region of a certain session of a CD-R1 recordable with multisessions if DRAW with this management information is permitted in order to retrieve the DRAW session, thereby causing the search movement with PSi as a target. The read position of an optical pickup 3 enters the position having a possibility of the existence of the next session but if a search error occurs because of the session which does not actually exist, the controller turns off various kinds of servo once to forcibly end the search. The controller turns on various kinds of the servo again and checks whether the lock of the spindle servo is detected by a phase comparator 42A within the prescribed time or not and unless the lock is detected, the controller discriminates the absence of the DRAW session.
