1308743 Active carbon BERGWERKSVERBAND GmbH 22 June 1971 [17 July 1970] 29209/71 Heading C1A Active coke, charged with sulphuric acid by absorbing SO 2 from waste gases, is regenerated by being first washed with dil. H 2 SO 4 or water and then washing with water in the presence of ammonia or with ammonium hydroxide. The first washing stage is such as to wash out a major amount of the adsorbed H 2 SO 4 and the second stage removes the residue thereof. The ammonium sulphate in the effluent of the second stage may be decomposed with an alkali so as to form gaseous ammonia which is recycled to the second stage.
